Fall sunflower, Helianthus angustifolius, Photograph by Joseph De Sciose
Fall sunflower, Helianthus angustifolius, swamp sunflower, This is the last sunflower of the season. The plants can easily grow to 10 feet tall so it is a good idea to stake them. I try to remember to cut the plants in half in July which will control the height and also increase the number of flowers in the fall. Just when you think they are never going to flower they pop out usually by the last week in September. The spread on their own and like full blazing sun. I took this photograph with high speed flash using a strobe and an umbrella reflector.
Spider Web through my kitchen window, photograph by Joseph De Sciose
Spiders are very active this year, spider webs are everywhere. Does this mean we are going to have a cold winter or a hot one or that the Mayans really are right? I photographed this web and its spider through my kitchen window one morning. It was completely gone the next day. How can one little spider so quickly and so perfectly make this beautiful web?
Tiny frog on a plastic sheet, photograph by Joseph De Sciose
This tiny frog is smaller than a penny. When I first noticed it I thought it was a piece of dirt. Somehow he had ended up on a plastic drop cloth and, as a result, highly visible. On a plant or on the ground he would be completely camouflaged.
Wilted variegated daphne plant, photograph by Joseph De Sciose
Wilted variegated daphne plant. This was an incredibly beautiful and perfectly shaped shrub until one day it suddenly wilted and died. Just one of the many challenges of gardening. I planted it about 5 years ago when it was less than 6 inches tall. It had been a true joy to see it thrive. The aroma of its flowers was intoxicating when it bloomed in late January . I will miss it greatly.
The Pump don’t Work cause the Vandals Took the Handle, Photograph by Joseph De Sciose
The Pump don’t Work cause the Vandals Took the Handle, with deference to Bob Dylan, this old pump won’t work cause the Vandals really did take the handle. Just another example of life imitating art. Photographed at an abandoned property in Northern Alabama on a hot day in June.
