2001 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Photograph by Joseph De Sciose

I photographed The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City for many years. If you have never had the glorious experience of attending this parade you must put it on the list of things to do before you die. Imagine more than 2 million people along the parade route cheering marching bands, clowns, helium balloons and of course Santa Claus. The most memorable parade was in 2001. This was only 10 weeks after the attacks of September 11. It a was a magnificent blue sky day with temps in the low 50’s. Parade participants came from all across the U.S. The 2 million spectators were exuberant and ecstatic. The parade went off without a hitch and I think we all realized for the first time since 9-11 that it was all going to be OK. New York would make it, the country would make and somehow humanity would make it. We were all thankful for a great and wonderful parade. Happy Thanksgiving!
